In her cycling days Eileen Sheriden a Coventry born lady was national 25 mile time trial
champion in 1945, only a year after riding her first race. She had a break when
her son was born but was soon back to be national champion at 25, 50 and 100
miles and all round national champion in 1949 and 1950. Following this she
turned professional to pursue distance records and was given a contract to ride
for the Hercules Bicycle Company of Coventry. During the late 1940’s and
1950’s she broke all the records of the Women’s Road Records Association, 5 of
the 21 still stand. The classic Lands End to John O’Groats was ridden by Eileen
in 11 hours less than the previous record but she was not allowed to stop and
celebrate, she got back on her bike and continued to also break the 1000 mile
record.
